Description

This is an OE-style replacement flywheel for use with a 10.5 in. stock-style clutch on early Ford 289/302 engines.

What's Included:

  • Flywheel, cast iron, 157-tooth, external balance, 28 oz. imbalance, sized for 10.5 in. stock-style clutch
Fitment

The 289 (all years) and early 302 (1968-1980) engines use 28-oz balance, while 1982-and-up 302s (including the 5.0L) use 50-oz balance. Both engines commonly use 157-tooth or 164-tooth flywheels, which must match the bellhousing, starter, and clutch size (10-inch or 11-inch). A pre-1981 302 flywheel will work on a 289, but a 1982-or-later 302 flywheel will not work on a 289.

Questions & Answers

Q: How do I know if my engine needs this 28oz flywheel or a 50oz one?

Ford's 302 changed factory balance specs around the 1980-1981 model years (a crankshaft counterweight redesign), moving from 28oz to 50oz external balance - sources vary slightly on the exact model-year cutoff. This flywheel is the 28oz version intended for 289s and earlier 302s, as noted in this listing's title. The two specs are not interchangeable - a 28oz flywheel will bolt to a 50oz-balanced engine but leaves it dangerously out of balance, so verify your specific engine's balance spec (check your original flywheel/flexplate stamp or with a machine shop) before ordering, especially if your 302 was built right around that changeover.

Q: Will this work with a 351W?

No - this is a 157-tooth small-block pattern for 289/302 only. 351W/351C engines use the larger 164-tooth bellhousing and flywheel pattern.

Q: Is this a stock-style flywheel or built for a performance clutch?

It's an OE-style replacement for a stock clutch setup - cast iron, 10.5" diameter - sized to pair with a stock-style 10.5" organic clutch disc like our Clutch Kit for 1986-2001 Mustang.
